Evaluation of Unit 1:
Overall, I feel our group was successful in the creation of
our DepicT short film. My role was basically the director and camera operator. I
had to make sure every shot was on point (in the studio and outside). Along
with helping with pre-production ideas I feel I was a valuable member of the
team.
Our final product ended up being two minutes long due to our
misunderstanding of how long our shots were. Jake was tasked with cutting it
down from three and a half minutes which proved to be difficult as we wanted
the narrative to stay the same. Cutting out the entirety of the witness’
interview out making his contribution very minimal. The final cut was good with
no visible continuity errors and the editing was seamless overall using b-roll
to cover transitions and shots of the reporter just talking, other than a
slight error in the timing of the cross-fades in the “a few minutes later” card
it was all good.
We had no issues with the filming other than the weather
preventing us from following schedule and filming in the outside location.
We did stray from the pre-production paperwork to improve the
final piece. Cutting some scenes from the storyboard and going off script
partially because no one read it, so improvisation was used instead. Our
schedule was also not followed very well due to the weather, exams in skills
and booking issues with the greenscreen room. The extra filming and editing
time helped the improvement of the final product. Despite the issues all went
well to create a funny final short film.
